Megamind 2: There WON’T BE ONE Because of Financial Aspects?

By Radu Tyrsina / July 30, 2014 / Culture 5634

Even in 2014, many out there are still hoping that there will be a sequel to the Megamind animation movie that was released back in 2010.

The online environment has been abuzz with Megamind fans demanding a sequel for the original Megamind movie and there have even been written interesting plots.

However, by the looks of it, there isn’t going to be a Megamind 2 movie, if we consider the most important aspect involved – money.

While Megamind received generally positive reviews from critics mainly for strong visuals, it was criticized for not being original enough. The movie had a budget of $130 million and grossed over $321 million worldwide.

It’s considered a moderate box office success, but it’s also one of the lowest grossing DreamWorks animated films. The company probably wanted to see if it’s worth doing a sequel and released a short film, titled Megamind: The Button of Doom on February 25, 2011.

And by the looks of it, the reaction was good, as it was the seventh best selling DVD of 2011 with over 3 million units sold and total sales of $43 million. However, all these number might not be enough to result in a nice profit after all expenses have been deducted.

Back in April 2011, DreamWorks Animation’s CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg, said that they don’t plan to produce a sequel to Megamind, saying that this movie, along with Shrek and other similar ones

“shared an approach and tone and idea of parody, and did not travel well internationally. We don’t have anything like that coming on our schedule now.”

So, besides the fact that Megamind didn’t manage to bring in a big profit, it seems that a sequel could have a weak plot line. Leave your comment below and express your anger or disappointment on this and let us know your opinion.

Wow greed makes me sad. My kids ask me if they were doing a second movie. Mega Minds would be awesome a team of MetroMan and Megamind . However I am forced to say that the minds whom created the hero movie are greedy dark and nothing but empty makers of pixels in a world lost in fancy words and flashy colors. Mega Minds 2 could renew our faith and show us that yes… indeed Christian Johnson good stories are still out there waiting to be told. Mega Minds has simply needed to find the right time to be born into the world.
