Opera Mobile Store to Replace Nokia Store in Series 40, 60, Symbian, Asha and Nokia X Devices
Microsoft has bought Nokia’s phone and services division, and the company is not allowed to make any phones until sometime in 2016. Microsoft has already started rebranding pretty much everything that has ‘Nokia’ in its name and now it seems that it’s Nokia Store’s turn.
The Opera Mobile Store will replace Nokia Store as the default app store for Nokia feature phones, Symbian and Nokia X smartphones, after an agreement between Opera Software and Microsoft has been signed. Another one could take place next year, when Microsoft is said to launch smartphones with Opera Mini as the default browser.
So, starting with the first quarter of 2015, those who will access the Nokia Store from Series 40, Series 60, Symbian, Asha and Nokia X devices will be automatically redirected to Opera Mobile Store. The migration should be complete in the first half of 2015, when the Nokia Store will be closed. Rich Bernardo, Vice President, Phones, Microsoft, said the following:
“We continue to sell and support classic Nokia devices, which remain popular in many parts of the world. We’re delighted to partner with Opera Software and continue to provide a reliable app store experience for consumers and developers alike.”
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, also weighed in:
“When the current users of the Nokia Store are migrated to Opera Mobile Store, they will continue to get fresh, interesting apps for their Nokia phones. The Opera Mobile Store becomes an even more significant player in the app store market, and Nokia mobile phone users get a first-class app store for years to come.”
The Opera Mobile Store has around 300,000 apps and games available and once Nokia Store will become extinct, Opera could become the third largest app store in terms of downloads.
Users will have to create an account with Opera to shop for apps, which will definitely help Opera boast with new numbers. Do you still own a feature phone? And if so, what do you think of this announcement?
