Asus PadFone Mini Launches in India, the Smartphone that Morphs Into a Tablet
The Asus PadFone Mini is a uniquely designed product, which seems to be aimed at a niche audience. However, you might never guess just how many out there are interested in having a smartphone-tablet hybrid.
The Taiwan-based company is now expanding its product with a new big and important market – India. PadFone mini smartphone-tablet hybrid is priced at Rs. 15,999, which is slightly less than $260. For this price, you get a 4-inch tablet that can transform into a 7-inch tablet. The whole shebangis pretty compact and durable, weighing 376 grams together.
The Asus PadFone mini runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and is skinned with Asus’ ZenUI, which is a big drawback at the moment. However, Asus has promised that an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade for the PadFone mini is on the cards, but hasn’t specified the exact release date. So, don’t get your hopes high about the Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The smartphone sports a 4-inch WVGA (480×800-pixel) IPS+ display and is dual-SIM cabal. The separate tablet dock has a 7-inch WXGA (1280×800-pixel) IPS+ display. The PadFone mini is powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor, coupled with 1GB of LPDDR2 RAM.
It comes with 8GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD card (up to 64GB). The smartphone also features an 8-megapixel ‘PixelMaster’ rear f/2.0 BSI camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. A 1,170mAh non-removable battery powers the smartphone alone while the tablet dock comes with an additional 2,100mAh non-removable polymer battery.
Connectivity-wise, it gets GPRS/ EDGE, HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, and Micro-USB. The PadFone mini will be available in Black, Blue, Red, White and Yellow. Peter Chang, Regional Head, South Asia and Country Manager, System Business Group, Asus India said the following:
“Today’s introduction of PadFone Mini marks further extension of the PadFone series which expands our users’ world where they will enjoy, achieve and save categorically. It is an alluring proof to substantiate our prime focus on the bringing incredible. We are assertive that PadFone Mini will touch customers’ heart and take us a step ahead to deliver what our brand promises.”
When switching between smartphone and tablet modes, PadFone mini comes with the exclusive DynamicDisplay technology which ensures that apps are correctly resized. The tablet has a screen of just 7 inch, because I think that if it were somewhere near 10, the device didn’t have enough juice to offer a compromise-free experience.
This is an interesting product and it will be curious to observe how will consumers react to it. The price can be considered affordable, if we take into account the unique design that it comes with.
