Google’s Project Ara Will Get The New Chipsed Produced By Rockchip
Google’s version of Phonebloks, highly-customizable modular smartphone, Project Ara definitely gets the attention from people. In order to that, the prototype of the modular smartphone will get the new feature in form of the new chipset.
Developing team of Google’s highly-customizable modular smartphone, Project Ara has just announced that they prepared the a custom-made processor for the device. For those who are unfamiliar with Project Ara, it’s Google’s project which aims to develop a modular smartphone that will allow users to customize it and replace its components, just like its the case with PC or Phonebloks.
Chinese chip manufacturer, Rockchip will create the new SoC for Project Ara, that chipset will replace the Texas Instruments OMAP 4660 processors used in earlier prototypes of Project Ara. As the customizable architecture of Ara allows, the new processor will come in the form of native, general-purpose UniPro interface and it is specifically designed to work as an independent module, with no need for a bridge chip.
“We view this Rockchip processor as a trailblazer for our vision of a modular architecture where the processor is a node on a network with a single, universal interface – free from also serving as the network hub for all of the mobile device’s peripherals,” head of Project Ara at Google ATAP, Paul Eremenko, said.
Besides the announcement of the new component for Project Ara, Eremenko revealed that those who won units at the Google I/O will have to wait a bit to get their devices. The reason for that is planting the boards with an incorrect material, which caused a mess in the schedule.
Deliveries of the redesigned hardware will probably start withing the next month, as Google will “adjust prize challenge timelines accordingly”.
Prototypes of Rockship’s forthcoming SoC chipset are expected to come out in early 2015. Recent development of Project Ara is going very well, so we should expect this great device to come soon, because it will definitely be the refreshment for the smartphone market, and users will definitely enjoy using and customizing it.
