As many may have already figured out, the reason behind the Motorola acquisition by Google was the strong patent portfolio of the company. Google’s Android operating system has been facing intensive heat from Apple as well as Microsoft which lead the search giant to strike this deal with Motorola.

Just last week this is what Sanjay Jha, Motorola Mobility CEO had to say about their patent portfolio:
“We have a very large IP portfolio, and I think in the long term, as things settle down, you will see a meaningful difference in positions of many different Android players — both, in terms of avoidance of royalties, as well as collecting them. And that will make a big difference to people who have very strong IP positions.”
Well, the news is that Google has got over 17,000 patents and around 7,500 pending patent applications from the Motorola acquisition. This will sure help the Android platform to a great extent.
