Cortana

Definitely the most anticipated and mentioned feature of Windows Phone 8.1. In case you’re not familiar, Cortana is Microsoft’s voice-based virtual assistant.

Microsoft’s Cortana is based on a character from Microsoft’s own popular video game, Halo. Cortana is powered by Bing, and is a rival feature of Apple’s Siri and Google Now. Cortana will completely replace the search feature in Windows Phone 8.1. Besides English, Cortana will also have support for Chinese language.

Better Start Screen Personalization

Microsoft is trying to make start screen more customizable to users. In order to that, they added ‘Start background’ feature that allows users to add an image to the tiles on the Start screen of the device. Before that, users were limited to use solid colors of their live tiles.

Action Center for notification

Another highly anticipated feature is included in this update. Microsoft will finally released much awaited Action Center. Microsoft brings Action Center to all Windows Phone-based devices which will show notifications for calls, messages, emails, apps and other.

This feature will bring quick customization of Flight Mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Rotation Lock settings. You can access Action Center by swiping down from the top of the screen, just like you do with Android devices.

Word Flow Keyboard

Another similarity to Android is addition of the Word Flow Keyboard. This feature is similar to Swype keyboard, and is allowing users to type words by swiping over the keyboard.

Microsoft says that the Word Flow Keyboard is one of the ‘most intuitive smartphone keyboards’. The Word Flow Keyboard supports 16 languages, but we don’t have an exact information what are these languages.

Skype Integration

And the final item on our list is Skype integration into Windows Phone 8.1 system. The integration of the Skype app will allow users to switch a regular call to a Skype video call with just one click.

Skype has also been designed to work with Cortana, so you can tell Cortana who do you want to call with Skype, and virtual assistant will call that person for you.
