Jolla’s Sailfish OS Continues its EXPANSION to Asia as its Smartphone Lands in Hong Kong

Smaller mobile operating systems are awesome and that’s why we’ve recently talked about Samsung’s Tizen, Mozilla’s Firefox OS and Canonical’s Ubuntu Touch. There’s one that deserves to be mentioned, as well and that’s Jolla’s Sailfish OS.

jolla sailfish os smartphone Jolla and 3 Hong Kong carrier have officially announced the availability of Jolla’s Sailfish OS-based smartphone on the local market, which means the European product expands to the far East with this move. The device is listed at HK $2,888, which is the equivalent of $373 or €279.

If you choose to buy the phone on the company’s 4G LTE plan deals, you will be able to get it for $0 upfront. HTHKH Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Tan said the following at the official unveiling:

“We are thrilled to be the first in Asia to bring the Jolla smartphone that runs on the Sailfish OS to 3 Hong Kong customers. We believe Jolla is an exciting option for tech-savvy smartphone users who are looking for a new and fresh mobile user experience.

Fast and unique user experience can be achieved via 3 Hong Kong’s high-speed and extensive 4G LTE network and Jolla’s Android application compatibility.”

As a reminder for those who aren’t aware yet, the Sailfish OS has been built on the heritage of MeeGo, which is an open source operating system. The Jolla smartphone comes with a button-less feature-rich experience and support for applications designed for the Android operating system. It comes with a 4.5-inch touchscreen display, a dual-core processor, and 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded via microSD cards.

There’s a 8-megapixel camera on the back, with HD video recording, as well as support for 4G LTE networks, and the usual set of connectivity capabilities. The Jolla smartphone comes with The Other Half smart covers, which provide a unique experience. Antti Saarnio, chairman of the Board of Jolla Ltd., said the following:

“Hong Kong is a trendsetter in mobile, and we are very happy to bring Jolla to Hong Kong together with 3 Hong Kong. This is our first operator partnership in Asia, and we feel that 3 Hong Kong is the perfect partner for us. Together with 3 Hong Kong, we will introduce our new mobile operating system, Sailfish OS, a true 3rd alternative to today’s two dominating operating systems to the Hong Kong market.”

Folks from Hong Kong are known to be some of the most tech savvy persons on this planet, so by managing to bring Jolla to that market shows that the company is confident in its product.
