When Will Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Support End?
Recently, Google has published the exact dates when they will be ending customer support for the Pixel and Nexus series. Basically, if a device still receives security updates, it will be getting support both over the phone and online from the tech giant. The device OEMs have to get the major Android updates for 18 months after the official release of a device. However, Google has been providing major updates for the Nexus and Pixel ones for minimum 2 years.
This means that they got the chance to see 2 big Android versions, besides the one they were released with. On the other hand, security updates are provided for a much longer period of time. In the case of the two phone series, they are guaranteed to receive updates for one year after the period of major update support will end.
The dates that were officially provided by the company correspond to the time when the guaranteed support will be ending for a particular device. However, Google, as well as the device manufacturer, can still provide support and other updates after the official date, if they want to.
The Exact Dates
As such, Nexus 6 will be the first one to see the end of official support. Both security updates and support will end in October. Other models, such as the much loved Nexus 5, have already terminated their support period. Nexus 9 has the same date as the Nexus 6. Meanwhile, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will still receive major updates until September 2017, with security updates ending September 2018.
Pixel and Pixel XL will not be receiving major updates after October 2018, with security updates and support ending one year later, in October 2019.
