Sony unveils Xperia Z Ultra with a 6.44-inch display and Snapdragon 800 processor

After various rumors and speculations, Sony has finally launched its Xperia Z Ultra smartphone-tablet hybrid (or phablet) which was codenamed Togari. This new phablet is just 6.5mm thick and weighs 212 grams, I find this quite impressive but then I am not a fan of phone with massive displays.

This new Sony device sports a 6.44-inch display with 1080p Full HD resolution. The display further includes TRILUMINOS technology which was first seen with Sony’s Bravia HDTVs. As rumored the device is indeed powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 quad-core processor which is clocked at 2.2GHz. This is certainly good news for Sony as the company is finally catching with the processing power which its competitors offer.

Furthermore, the Xperia Z Ultra is a water and dust proof device with IP58 certification which is better than the IP55/IP57 certification of the Xperia Z. It features X-Reality which helps optimizing photos and videos for improved visual experience as it even upscales low-res content for its 1080p resolution display.

The device sports an 8 megapixel Exmor RS rear camera and there is a secondary front facing camera which suffices the need for video calling and taking duck-faced selfies. A cool feature is the ability of this smartphone to take photos and record videos underwater.

In terms of the software, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra comes pre-loaded with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which is skinned with Sony’s own customized user interface. It further includes Sony’s new Walkman app along with Movies app, and Album app, and updated sharing functionality with improved cloud integration. The device also supports any stylus with a conductive tip, this includes a regular pencil.

In terms of the connectivity features, it is well equipped with all the latest technology including – NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G LTE support. Sony claims that the device is capable to provide a battery life of talktime and 790 hours of standby time.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be available in black, white and purple color variants and it will come bundled with a water resistant Bluetooth handset.

At the moment the company has not revealed any details on the pricing and the specific availability of the smartphone. It is expected to launch globally in Q3 this year.
