MNP Numbers Out, 11 Million People Dumped Their Operator

Its been a whole 8 months since mobile number portability (MNP) launched all across India. We were very excited by it and even listed it as THE top thing to watch out for this calendar year. Now, some official numbers are pouring in as we see who were the biggest winners and losers.

In total, 11 million people switched from their operators to another one. Unsurprisingly, the biggest switch, in general came from CDMA operators to GSM operators. Company wise, the biggest loser was Reliance as a staggering 4.5 lac customers from Reliance GSM and more than 6 lac from Reliance CDMA relieved it of its services and switched to another operator. The biggest gainer was Vodafone, which gained over 10 lac customers fro other operators.

Here are some other stats for you guys to number crunch on:

  • Tata lost 4.5 lac and more than 1.5 lac customers from its CDMA and GSM (DoCoMo) services respectively.
  • Idea (8.7 lac customers) and Airtel (6.3 lac customers) followed Vodafone in biggest gains.
  • Aircel gained around 73,000 customers.

These are some preliminary numbers. Watch this space at Gigjets as we get you more info regarding the MNP stats. Either way, we are just happy that people are responding to this service, which was long overdue anyway. Our only worry now is whether the operators (the gainers in particular) will adjust their networks to avoid congestion of their networks.
