Apparently Google’s dominance on the web search business is seriously threaten by competitors lately. Apple’s new star, Siri and the voice technology that equips iPhone 4S is challenging Google on its own field, as users become accustomed with a new way of searching on the Internet.

Asking the digital assistant for help is not only easier than typing in front of a computer a question, but also allows the user to avoid Google advertisements. Slowly Siri introduces a new approach to web searching and changes the users’ habits. Moreover, Siri doesn’t use only Google to find answers, it also looks for information on Bing and Yahoo, if “she” is specifically asked to do that or if the setting are adjusted to provide data from another search engine.
However, Siri relies on databases like Yelp, Wikipedia, and Wolfram Alpha to deliver answers. And it works pretty well, even if Siri is in beta stage. As the time goes and the technology evolves and databases grow and become more specialized, Siri is expected to deliver more complex results for searches. Already when it comes to business searches Siri beats Google at its own game and in the future this will cost Google.
On the other hand, Google doesn’t sit and turns the other cheek while Apple is attacking. Google CEO Eric Schmidt acknowledged the competition and hinted to a few counter attacking moves. The Goggles app for instance was an intriguing search method that allows users to take a picture of an object and then to receive information about it. Meanwhile, Google also focuses on voice recognition, as the new features integrated in Google Translate prove.
