Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P: Manually Flash Android 8.0 Oreo Without Wiping Data
Google unveiled Android 8.0 Oreo during the recent lunar eclipse and the operating system finally started rolling out. Pixel and Pixel XL are the two smartphones which are receiving Google’s latest operating system ahead of everyone. The next devices in line are Google’s own Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. In fact, the verified Google Nexus Twitter account posted a tweet on August 31st which confirmed that Nexus 5X and 6P will receive Android 8.0 Oreo just after Pixel and Pixel XL.
Many people are wondering when will the highly anticipated update reach their smartphone. Sadly, we don’t have an exact answer to that question since it depends on their country and network carrier. Even though the final version of Google’s operating system is live, carriers need to test it out first. For example, Canadian carriers announced that Android 8.0 Oreo will start rolling out on September 11th.
Available OTA Images
Fortunately, tech savvy Android fans can install the new operating system themselves. Google uploaded the official OTA images for Android 8.0 Oreo on its Android Developer website. Interested Nexus 5X and 6P owners can download the images from there and manually flash them on their smartphone. Worth mentioning is that Google announced that Nexus 5X and 6P owners are not needed to wipe their device’s data in order to flash the new operating system.
Google’s developer’s page contains the following statement in regard to flashing the OTA images: “This page contains binary image files that allow you to manually update your Nexus or Pixel device. This has the same effect of flashing the corresponding factory images, but without the need of wiping the device”. This is great news since the only downside to manually flashing Android software was that people lost all of their data, including photos and contacts.
