PewDiePie Makes $4M per Year, Reaches 28+M YouTube Subscribers

YouTube has become a true money making tool for many video creators. One of them, PewDiePie, is allegedly making $4 million per year.

PewDiePie, or Felix Kjellberg, has almost 30 million subscribers on his YouTube gaming channel which have helped him pull in more than $4 million per year from advertising. The information comes from a recent WSJ report:

“The 24-year-old Mr. Kjellberg, who created PewDiePie five years ago, has parlayed his persona into a brand name that pulls in the equivalent of $4 million in ad sales a year, most of it pure profit. In December 2012, PewDiePie signed on with Maker Studios, a producer of online content that takes a cut of ad sales.”

“Maker Studios—which counts on PewDiePie as its most important personality—sold itself to Walt Disney Co. earlier this year in a deal that could be worth close to $1 billion, depending on certain performance targets.”

According to some recent data from TubeFilter, PewDiePie’s fame is fading, as he is getting a lot of new subscribers with every day. PewDiePie averaged roughly 30,300 new subscribers per day, 1,262 subscribers per hour, 21 subscribers per minute, and one new subscriber every 2.9 seconds for the past month.

PewDiePie makes a fortune on YouTube

Here’s what PewDiePie himself says about creating videos:

“Unlike many professionally produced shows, I think I’ve established a much closer contact with my viewers, breaking the wall between the viewer and what’s behind the screen. What I and other YouTubers do is a very different thing, it’s almost like hanging around and watching your pal play games. My fans care in a different way about what they are watching.”

PewDiePie seems rather uncomfortable with success and he says he’d rather have less subcribers:

“I’m so central to YouTube now, and that puts me in the spotlight and raises a lot of questions like ‘Why is he so big?'”. I’d much rather prefer to have something like 5 million subscribers.”
