Firefox To Scorch You With Version 5 On June 21

Its been only three months since the last version of the popular free and open source browser, Mozilla Firefox, released. And while the response to Firefox was more than enthusiastic, Mozilla decided that it was time for another version already. So the guys are now releasing Firefox 5 on June 21st.

Firefox 5 will not have any major changes interface wise, but will instead focus on improving speed, stability and security, as will the future versions 6 and 7, which will be released this calendar year itself, according to Mozilla. Feature wise, Firefox 5 brings with it support for CSS animation as well as a easier way to access the do-not-track setting through the privacy pane.

Truth be told, we are a little surprised that Mozilla would choose label this as a whole new version, given that its doesn’t exactly get too much to the table to justify itself as a major release or upgrade. I suspect part of their decision could be based on the development pace and version naming policy of their rivals, Google Chrome. But as an astute unknown observer on the internet remarked, “Did this really need to be version 5? Do they feel inadequate next to Chrome’s 14 versions? Someone needs to tell the Firefox guys it’s more about girth than length.”!

Firefox’s tardy sense of urgency of late is all thanks to Chrome , now approaching beta 14

    truth to be told,
if you’d done any research before writing, you wouldn’t have been surprised at all. in fact, it is part of the new release cycle witch was announced already before the final release of ff4

I did know about the release cycle announced by Mozilla, which is why I mentioned in the post that versions 6 and 7 too are going to be released this calendar year. However, I still don’t think that it is justified for Mozilla to name these as new major versions when the changes are relatively minimal in contrast to the expectations that a major release builds up with the public at large, and I think that it could hurt their and their development team’s image.

it’s only a number, what does major release mean anyway? with this new cycle, features are included much faster, so people don’t have to wait years for features that already exist.that actually means that ‘major versions’ don’t exist anymore and instead you’re up to date constantly. I think this way is the only way that can really live up to today’s demands off a constantly changing web.
