RIM sets up BlackBerry Server in Mumbai

After increasing pressure from Indian officials, Canadian company Research In Motion has finally set up its BlackBerry server in Mumbai. The Indian government had asked the company provide a way to lawfully intercept the company’s messenger services. In a recent meeting at the Union Home Ministry, officials of security agencies have been informed that RIM has installed servers in Mumbai.

We have been hearing about this since a long time and as we know the government and RIM have been discussing on lawfully intercepting its enterprise mail and messenger services. The servers have already been inspected and permission for direct linkage for the interception will be granted shortly.

However, RIM is not the only one as security officials have also raised concern for Nokia’s Push Mail services and the government is suggesting the Finnish manufacturer to produce a similar solution.

RIM representatives mentioned explained that their mobile devices send the encrypted email which is sent to BlackBerry Enterprise Server located with the services provider and according to the licensing condition it is up to the service providers to introduce a mechanism to allow security agencies to a required conversation for any subscriber.

In India BlackBerry services are offered Airtel, BSNL, MTNL, Reliance Communications, Tata and Vodafone. Hence it finally falls in the hands of these operators to ensure that the security officials get the required access to intercept communications.
